Unit-1: Teaching English as a Second Language

• Principles of second language learning.
• Factors affecting second language learning – developmental, socio-economic and psychological factors.
• Teaching of English at the elementary level with reference to National Curriculum Framework-2005 and Bihar Curriculum Framework-2008.
• Understanding the curriculum-syllabus-textbook of English in Bihar at primary level.
• Approaches for teaching of English:

-       Behaviourist approach – Grammar Translation Method; Audio-Lingual drill.

-       Structural approach.

-       Communicative approach.

-       Cognitive approach.

-       Constructivist approach.

Unit-2: Strategies of Teaching Language Skills – Listening and Speaking

• Listening – sound recognition, pre-listening, while listening and post listening activities, syllable, stress, intonation and rhythm.
• Speaking – reciting a poem, participating in a dialogue/conversation, greetings, asking and answering questions and conveying information.
• Tools and techniques for assessment.
• Learning Plan – Special emphasis on Listening and Speaking.
• Learning Indicators for Listening and Speaking.

Unit-3: Strategies of Teaching Language Skills – Reading and Writing

A)    Reading: Silent and loud reading, skimming and scanning, pre-reading, while reading and post reading.

B)    Writing:

• Controlled and guided writing:

-       Conveying information (posters, notices, descriptions of places, persons and things).

-       Persuading others (advertisements, articles).

-       Maintaining social relations (invitations, letters, etc.).

-       Writing as a process: brainstorming, mind map, drafting, evaluation, reviewing, editing, final draft.

• Free writing – Expressing one’s feelings and thoughts, e.g., diaries, e-mails, SMS.
• Tools and Techniques for assessment.
• Learning Plan – Special emphasis on reading and writing.
• Learning indicators for writing.

Unit-4: Teaching Vocabulary and Grammar in Context

• Strategies for vocabulary teaching based on different parts of speech – word association and formation, word search from a grid, bingo game, antakshari, idioms and their meanings, matching words with their meaning, scrabble, spelling games, dictation, anagrams, scrambling words, cross word puzzles.
• Approaches to grammar teaching with emphasis on grammar in context (activities illustrating this approach to be suggested)
