Unit 1- Teaching of English at the Elementary Level

  • Issues of learning English in a multilingual’ multicultural society.
  • Issues of teaching English as second language at (a) Early primary- class I and II, (b) Primary- class III, IV and V.
  • Learner socio-Cultural background and need learning English.

 

Unit 2- Understanding of Textbooks and Approaches to the Teaching of English

  • The cognitive and constructive approach-nature and role of learner, catering to different types of learners, age, of learning, learning style, teaching large classes, socio-cultural pace factors, and socio-psychological factors.
  • Behaviouristic approach- direct method, grammar-translation method, structural, approval, communicative approach, state-specific methods- Activity Based Learning (ABL) and Active learning Methodology (ALM).

 

The internal assessment will be done on the following two sub-sections.

Unit 3- Classroom Transaction Process

  • Stating learning outcomes and achieving them.
  • Pair work, group work.
  • Use of storytelling, role play, drama, songs as pedagogical tools.
  • Pre-reading, reading and Post-reading, objectives and processes.
  • Questioning to promote thinking.
  • Dealing with textual exercises.

 

The internal assessment will be done on the following section

Unit 4- Curriculum, Textbook, and Material Development

  • Preparing material for young learners.
  • Using local resources.
  • Using open resource (OER’s) text, video, audio
  • Analyzing and receiving teaching-learning materials and OER’s.
  • Academic standards, learning indicators, and learning outcomes.
  • Need and process of curriculum revision
  • Text analysis of school textbooks for English

 

Unit 5- Planning & Assessment

  • Planning for teaching
  • Year plan, unit plan, and period plan.
  • Teachers’ reflection on their own teaching-learning practices
  • Continuous and comprehensive evaluation (CCE)
  • Monitoring of learning and giving feedback
